The moose are the largest members of the deer family. They have a broad antler and a long, dark brown coat. They live in northern forests, which are characterized by alders, aspens and pastures. Elks are particularly well adapted to the cold and prefer habitats in which the temperatures in summer do not rise above 15 degrees. They feed on young leaves and branch tips. With their twelve wide pairs of teeth in the back of the mouth six molar pairs and six pairs of premolars, they can crush even the hardest woody parts of plants. Their rutting season lasts from the beginning of September to the end of October. They lose their antlers each year during the rut, which then re-grows over the winter.
