Chamaedorea is among the most resistant houseplants. It can exceed one meter in height and looks very good for hydroculture cultivation.
It has a single, erect stem and pinnate leaves gathered in alternate groups. It is a small palm, and for this reason it is also called Palme Minori
Botanical classification
Chamaedorea belongs to the Arecaceae family (ie the Palms) to the Chamaedorea genus which includes more than one hundred species from Central and South America.
General features
Chamaedorea is a rustic plant, considered and defined as a palm that stands out for its thin stems that make up a kind of rose and from which fronds like those of palm trees develop.
When the old leaves fall, they leave room for the new ones and are remembered for evident scars.
It has origins in the countries with a tropical climate between southern Mexico and Guatemala, has a very rapid growth, reaches 2.5 meters in height in nature, but rarely exceeds one meter in height in the apartment. It has a very slow growth.
Very popular since the Victorian period thanks to its elegance, its adaptability to poorly lit environments and the lack of humidity (typical of domestic environments) and the ease of cultivation.
This palm is mentioned in the book of B.C. Wolverton on plants against pollution in the home.
It is also known as the "palm of fortune", in English also known as "Parlor Palm" (parlor palm) or "Neanthe Bella"
Chamaedorea is not difficult to grow, it is a rustic plant that resists high temperatures, the ideal temperature is still around 18 ° C.
Enjoy the light but not the direct sun. The ideal location is airy but without drafts.
To clean its leaves it is necessary to use a cloth wet with water.
As an outdoor plant it can be cultivated in tropical, subtropical and temperate-warm areas, in Italy it is possible in the southern areas, perhaps near the sea. It requires a shady position on soils rich in organic substance kept humid; withstands temperatures down to -4 ° C.
Watering
To ensure the right level of humidity it is advisable to use a saucer with water and gravel. During the summer, watering must be frequent, while during the winter it is sufficient to keep the soil just moist.
Ground
When the roots come out of the pot, repot it (in spring).
repotting takes place between March but only if there is no more space,
the soil must consist of fertile loam, leaf loam and coarse sand.
Fertilization
The Chamaedorea needs frequent fertilization during spring summer. In this period it is necessary twice a week to use, with the irrigation water, a liquid fertilizer that contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper ( Cu), zinc (Zn), boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), magnesium (mg).
Flowering
It does not bloom when cultivated in our latitudes or at least it is very rare, in its natural habitat it blooms in nature from June to October with an inflorescence inflorescence.
It blooms when it reaches maturity
Flowering indoors is really difficult, however, it depends on the different species and if it is in the ideal environmental conditions.
Pruning
The Chamaedorea is not pruned, it is limited to eliminate the dry leaves.
Multiplication
The Chamaedorea multiplies by seed from the end of February to the beginning of April.
The seeds must be placed in a soil, kept constantly humid, composed of peat and coarse sand and must be kept in the light but not in direct sun, and about 24-26 ° C covered with a transparent plastic sheet.
When the seeds have germinated, the cover rises and the amount of light is gradually increased and the temperature is reduced (about 18 ° C) until the seedlings develop the first leaves, at which point they must be transplanted into individual and treated pots. as adult plants.
Parasites, diseases and other adversities
Very resistant. It then depends on the species
If the plant does not grow, perhaps the plant has not received the elements that fertilization guarantees. Fertilize more
If the plant has brown spots on the underside of the leaves, it may have contracted the cochineal, it is necessary to remove them with cotton swabs and alcohol, or use specific pesticides.
It can be attacked by red spider mites if the air is too dry.
If the leaf tips dry, the plant may have received too little or too much water.

For the 12cm potted plant:
